Summit to focus on advanced technologies in utility portfolios

SEATTLE – April 7, 2006 – Utility executives and state energy commissioners will learn about the latest approaches to integrating advanced technologies into their energy portfolios during a day-long invitation-only event this week. "Advanced Solutions in the Integrated Resource Portfolio," hosted by Athena (www.athenacompany.com) and SmartGrid Newsletter (www.smartgridnews.com) will feature four sessions with recognized experts talking about energy generation and transmission.

"The fact that we will have to transition toward smarter and greener energy systems is becoming abundantly clear, but now the issue for the utility sector is how to move closer to that future in a practical way that keeps the lights on and balance sheets healthy in the meantime." says P.S. Reilly, president and CEO of Athena. "We want to help utilities move beyond least cost planning," she added.

"This event brings the best and brightest together to share best practices and chart a path that makes sense for the region." Experts from the U.S. and Canada will share their experiences and knowledge with the attendees. Utility executives and key regulators will discuss ways of incorporating advanced approaches in renewables, distributed generation, grid advances, storage, and demand side management to utility portfolio planning. Sessions include: Resource Strategies, Transitioning to the Grid of the Future, Delivery Adequacy, and Value-based Regional Energy Plans.

The conference keynote will be delivered by Rick Sergel, President of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), who will address the group on the new mandatory, enforceable North America electric reliability standards of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

"The Energy Policy Act of 2005 means that electric reliability standards in North America will become mandatory and enforceable in the months ahead", says Rick Sergel, President of North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC). "If we vigorously enforce compliance, we can maximize effectiveness of the present system and provide incentive for investment delivering reliability of the electric grid," he added.

Event sponsors include AREVA T&D, British Columbia Transmission, Preston Gates Ellis LLP, Puget Energy, Stoel Rives LLP, Washington State Department of Commerce, Trade & Economic Development, and the U.S. Dept. of Energy. The event is being held from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Bellevue, Washington.
