A green revolution is afoot, Eastside businesses and community leaders are working to wrap their strategies and dollars around it. Defined by Kirkland-based Athena Institute as more value with less impact, sustainability is being embraced by both environmentalists and capitalists alike who see the potential in brilliant approaches that are more economically valuable, environmentally sound, and stable and secure.

The eastside is well represented by firms that stand to grow from this emerging focus on green, including environmental firms like Associated Earth Sciences, land development consultants like Triad and Associates, architecture firms like Otak, sustainable transportation firms like the Green Car Company, and research institutions like Athena, just to name a few.

Two events in September originated by eastside firms provide the opportunity for businesses and communities to understand more about what is possible, and give a platform for leading innovators to promote their solutions.

Discover Brilliant 2007 International Conference and Expo, September 17 – 19, 2007 will be held at the Seattle Sheraton and the Washington Convention Center and will explore Brilliant innovations and approaches to buildings, business, utilities, communities and transportation that generate more value, while reducing waste and negative environmental impacts. The event will be an opportunity for attendees to learn from world-class speakers and thought leaders.

Eastside students in junior high through college also have an opportunity to engage with Discover Brilliant and win a $ 1,000 scholarship.  The BE Brilliant Essay Contest asks students to write a persuasive letter directed to the business and government leaders of today about the legacy they should be leaving. Winners will serve as award presenters at the Discover Brilliant Gala Awards Ceremony on September 18, 2007. More information on the conference and the scholarship can be found at www.discoverbrilliant.com or on Athena’s website at www.athenacompany.com.

Closer to home, Sustainable September is a month-long celebration of sustainability in Kirkland, Redmond, and the Eastside designed to create public awareness and demand for sustainability and educate the public about the role sustainability plays in our future. This collaborative effort between the Kirkland Chamber, City leaders and businesses will showcase Eastside’s eco-savvy players and leaders in building the sustainable economy. Events throughout the month include continuing education classes, an expo, a green car show and more. (www.sustainableseptember.org)Creating a world focused on more value with less impact could lead to long-term prosperity for all of our businesses and communities.  In the meantime, the green movement will create a lot of new market winners, many of whom will call the Eastside their home.
