BC Vision for Growing the Power Technology Sector
A report on the Implementation Plan created by British Columbia's Alternative Energy & Power Technology Task Force.

Task Force chair Mossadiq Umadaly, who is also the current chairman of Xantrex Technologies, set up a Project team that included PS Reilly, the Project Manager; and key members of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, BC Hydro, Power Technology Alliance and other organizations.

What followed was a series of formal and informal meetings, discussions, and interviews on dozens of topics with government, industry, NGOs, academia and others to solicit their input on
the vision. The Task Force leveraged outside expertise and explored best practices from around the world on how others were advancing their systems and building a sector. In parallel, the Task Force also worked on a joint scope with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to build a framework for a master
energy plan for the Olympics and identify opportunities to enhance the games’ legacy of sustainability. The Task Force drew on its own perspectives and experience in industry and government to refine the vision and strategies and lay out the implementation steps that would have the biggest impact on moving the sector forward.

The purpose of these efforts was to generate:

Strategies – validate and enhance a 5 – 10 – 15 year vision for each of the five opportunity areas

Goals – identify preliminary economic development goals for the
opportunity area

Priorities – identify what the opportunity area needs from the crosscutting initiatives and how to balance these needs

Industry Partnerships – find ways the industry can partner internally and externally to provide solutions to BC, Canada and the world in each of the opportunity areas

Actions – lay out the specific steps we must take to achieve the
initiatives

Roles – identify which groups and individuals are best suited to carry actions forward

Resources – identify the resource requirements and where to find the funding and support

Timelines – establish schedule for major actions and deliverables

Measurement – determine milestones and success metrics
